The 3 Obesity Genes

To date, approximately 50 genes are associated with the onset of obesity. Across East Asia, three genes in particular β3AR, UCP1 and β2AR, are identified as key influencers related to weight gain or difficulties in losing weight.

β3AR Gene UCP1 Gene β2AR Gene
Variations in the β3AR gene, or the "APPLE TYPE, will most likely trigger the development of fat around the abdomen area, due to poor carbohydrate metabolism. Variations in the UCP1 gene, or the "PEAR TYPE", will most likely trigger the development of fat around the buttock areas and thighs, due to poor lipid metabolism. Variations in the β2AR gene, or the "BANANA TYPE", features a profile less prone to gaining weight. This is due to a higher lipid metabolism and being naturally insulin resistant.
